Orthodontics is the movement of teeth to improve both appearance and function.

Straight teeth are more aesthetically pleasing than misaligned (crooked or gapped) teeth. People with misaligned teeth have difficulties with dental hygiene, which can cause bleeding gums from infection and can progress into gum disease. Misaligned teeth can also cause problems with function such as tooth wear, joint pain and a traumatic bite.

Orthodontic treatment can correct all these problems, improve facial aesthetics and general oral health, which will increase the life span of your teeth. Modern techniques and materials allow treatment to be quicker and more cosmetically acceptable. After the teeth have been moved into the new position they will be held in position with a permanent fixed wire (retainer), bonded to the inside of the front teeth, or with a clear plastic retainer worn over the teeth at night. This will maintain tooth position and prevent future relapse (shifting of the teeth). Orthodontics tries wherever possible to avoid the extraction of teeth. If extractions are necessary, it is always kept to a minimum. It is never too late to straighten your teeth and improve the aesthetics of your smile. Teeth can be moved at any age so adults are able to benefit from orthodontics as well as children.

‘Invisalign’ is a new technique to straighten teeth. As the name suggests, it is almost invisible unlike fixed braces (which are quite visible). The aligners are changed every 2 weeks for a specified duration of time until the desired tooth position is achieved. The teeth are usually a little tender when the aligners are fitted but this wears off after a few of days. The aligners must be worn at least 20 hours a day and must be removed to eat and clean only.

‘Iman’ is another removable brace, which is worn for up to 4 months to rapidly correct minor tooth misalignments. As with the Invisalign the appliance must be worn for at least 20 hours a day and must be removed to eat and clean only

Fixed Braces consist of small brackets and bands, which are cemented to the teeth. A flexible wire is threaded through the brackets to apply pressure needed for tooth movement. This wire is adjusted or replaced approximately every 6 weeks, to gradually move the teeth into the correct position.
